Let Your Light Shine

We ought not to seek publicity for our virtue or notoriety for our zeal. But at the same time, it is a sin to hide what God has bestowed on us for the good of others. A Christian is not to be a village in a valley, but “a city that is set on a hill” (Matthew 5:14). A believer is not to be a candle under a basket, but a candle in a candlestick, giving light to all (Matthew 5: 15). Shyness may be lovely at times, and to hide oneself is undoubtedly modest—but hiding Christ within us can never be justified. Keeping back the truth which is precious to ourselves is a sin against others and an offense against God. If you have a nervous temperament and a retiring disposition, be careful that you don’t overindulge this propensity—you could become useless to the church. In the name of Jesus, who was not ashamed of you, battle your feelings and tell others what Christ has told you. If you can’t speak like a trumpet, use the still small voice. If the pulpit is not your platform or the media won’t carry your words to the world, say with Peter and John, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you” (Acts 3: 6). If you can’t preach a sermon on a mountainside, sit and talk to the Samaritan woman by Sychar’s well. Speak the praise of Jesus in your house, if not in the church building; in the field, if not in the marketplace; in the midst of your own family, if not within the great family of humanity. From the hidden springs within, let a sweet flow of testimony come forth, giving drink to everyone nearby. Don’t hide your treasure—trade with it and generate a good return for your Lord and Master. To speak for God will be refreshing to you, encouraging to saints, useful to sinners, and honoring to the Savior. Speechless children are a sorrow to their parents. Lord, enable all of your children’s tongues. —Charles Haddon Spurgeon, Morning and Evening

Letting our light shine means living in a way that reflects His character—showing kindness, extending grace, and standing for righteousness. Our words and actions should point others toward God, not for our glory, but so that they may see Him through us. Letting our light shine is not about being perfect or drawing attention to ourselves, but about faithfully representing Christ in our daily lives. When we serve with humility, love without condition, and walk in obedience to God, we illuminate the darkness around us. Even small acts of kindness or quiet moments of faithfulness can make a profound impact. As we abide in Christ, our light grows brighter, guiding others toward the hope and salvation found in Him. So today, let your light shine—boldly and joyfully—so that through you, others may see the goodness of God. —DH
