Inner Bridges

Prayer is the bridge between our conscious and unconscious lives. Often there is a large abyss between our thoughts, words, and actions, and the many images that emerge in our daydreams and night dreams. To pray is to connect these two sides of our lives by going to the place where God dwells. Prayer is “soul work” because our souls are those sacred centers where all is one and where God is with us in the most intimate way. Thus, we must pray without ceasing so that we can become truly whole and holy.” —Henri J. M. Nouwen, Bread for the Journey

1 Thessalonians 5:17 reads, "Pray without ceasing." This short but powerful verse reminds us that prayer is not just an occasional act but a way of life. Paul encourages believers to cultivate a continual attitude of prayer—remaining in constant communion with God. This doesn't mean we must be on our knees 24/7, but rather that our hearts should always be turned toward Him. Whether in moments of joy, sorrow, decision-making, or daily routines, we can offer silent prayers of thanksgiving, petition, and worship. A life of ceaseless prayer keeps us aware of God's presence, aligning our hearts with His will. As we make prayer a habit, we find strength, peace, and guidance in every situation. Even in the busiest moments, we can whisper prayers of gratitude or ask for wisdom. This continuous connection with God deepens our faith and reminds us that we are never alone. No matter what challenges arise, you can trust that He is listening, caring, and working on your behalf. As you practice a lifestyle of prayer, you will experience the truth of Philippians 4:6–7—His peace, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus. —DH
