We Walk by Faith, Not by Sight

Everywhere the attempt has been made to have the kingdom of God present not only to Faith but to sight. History is replete with Christian attempts to achieve some point of finality. There have been those who have claimed that they know the date of the Lord's return. Others have claimed that they have the right doctrine, the true form of Christian community, or that they constitute a final renewal movement. Behind these claims lies the desire to achieve some point of ultimateness, security, and certainty. However normal these desires may be, they finally lead us astray and produce rigidity or idolatry. For the Christian life is not one of certainty; but one of Faith; but not one of security, but one of risk; not one of ultimateness, but one of hope; and not one of safe arrival, but one of journey. The one thing that is certain is that we–with all our ideas, structures, institutions, doctrines, and principles–will need to experience ongoing change in the light of God's word and the work of his Holy Spirit. –Dietrich Bonhoeffer

2 Corinthians 5:7 tells us, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” Hebrews 11:1 gives us a wonderful definition of faith. It reads, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” What does it mean to ‘walk in the things hoped for’? What does it look like to ‘step out in faith’? God by His Holy Spirit calls us forward, out of our comfort zones, beyond ‘what we can see with our eyes’ to what we recognize in our hearts to be His guiding hand. Step out in faith today!
