Knowing God

What are we made for? To know God. What aim should we set ourselves in life? To know God. What is the "eternal life" that Jesus gives? Knowledge of God. What is the best thing in life, bringing more joy, delight and contentment than anything else? Knowledge of God. What, of all the states God ever sees man in, gives God most pleasure? Knowledge of himself. In these few sentences we have seen a great deal. Our point is one to which every Christian heart will warm, though the person whose religion is merely form will not be moved by it. What we have said provides at once a foundation, a shape, and a goal for our lives, plus a principle of priorities and a scale of values. –Dallas Willard

To know God. More than simply knowing about God (although learning about God is an important part of getting to know Him), we were created to know and relate with God in an intimate way, to share in His light and love. In this relationship, in His light and love, we find peace. As Willard says, knowing God “brings more joy, delight, and contentment than anything else.” We humans beings tend to run ourselves ragged in pursuit of these things: peace, joy, delight, and contentment. Jesus offers, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Invest in getting to know your God. He won’t leave you disappointed.
