Elisabeth Elliot can surely speak to this topic from experience, her life so radically altered that day in January 1956 when her husband Jim and four other missionaries were killed by the Auca in Ecuador. While I’m sure nothing can replace her husband, she has been able look back at the horrible experience and see that God didn’t protect her from it, He has in fact used it to draw her closer to Himself and to minister more powerfully through the event in her life. Lord willing, what we suffer through today won’t be martyrdom, but we can stand on the same promises—He never leaves nor forsakes us. If we can put whatever we’re experiencing in His hands, believing He has our best interest in heart, we can look forward expectantly. God is in this. —DH
