Creator, Sustainer, Author & Finisher
We have two bits of evidence about the Somebody [behind the Moral Law]. One is the universe He has made. If we used that as our only clue, then I think we should have to conclude that He was a great artist (for the universe is a very beautiful place), but also that He is quite merciless and no friend to man (for the universe is a very dangerous and terrifying place). The other bit of evidence is that Moral Law which He has put into our minds. And this is a better bit of evidence than the other, because it is inside information. You find out more about God from the Moral Law than from the universe in general just as you find out more about a man by listening to his conversation than by looking at a house he has built. —C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
Theologians have spoken of God’s “two books” which reveal Him to mankind: creation and the Bible. Creation, or God’s first volume, speaks as Lewis wrote, of an artistic creator, as the earth is beautiful, complex, and generative. The second volume Lewis refers to is that written account of God, the Bible, or most specifically in Lewis’ view here is the law of Moses, or the moral law. This book reveals God’s heart to readers; what makes God and His followers different from others—inside information, as Lewis calls it. These two testimonies—creation and revelation—reveal to us a God who is our Creator, Sustainer, Author and Finisher of life and faith. May we, as we seek to devote a portion of this day to studying and growing closer to our God, look for Him in both the world around us and the Word spoken to us, and then reflect both in our lives before Him and unto others. —DH
